This is a little tutorial for those using Ubuntu and want to change mouse polling rate, in order to get a faster and more responsive mouse.

Default setting for mouse polling rate on Ubuntu is 125 Hz. Most modern gamer mouse can have higher values like 500 or 1000 Hz.

As described in this tread: http://ubuntuforums....ad.php?t=392494 you can change your polling rate by editing of /etc/modules:

Using console, open /etc/modules in editor with admin rights:

sudo gedit /etc/modules

Ad this two lines at the end:

-r usbhid
usbhid mousepoll=x

value "x" can be:

1 = 1000Hz
2 = 500Hz
4 = 250Hz
8 = 125Hz
10 = 100Hz (Default)

for example, to change polling rate to 500Hz, end lines in /etc/modules schould be:

-r usbhid
usbhid mousepoll=2

Save it and reboot.

To check change, type in console:

cat /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll
x

"x" output should be the value you just added in /etc/modules.

For example above (500Hz):

cat /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll
2

Warning: change polling rate only if you know that you mice supports higher values!

Other issue can be higher CPU usage.

Agreed, I thought the tracking on my G9 was rather uneven vs. W7. Thanks!
Any other UCSD Grad students? PM me!

I'm using G9 too, and with higher polling rate mice works much better but, older G9 series like mine (not new G9x) seems to have some laser precision issue at higher DPI and low sensitivity values as described on this tread in Logitech forum:

http://forums.logite...ion/td-p/297631

Anyway, besides higher polling rate I suggest to disable mouse smoothing (/m_filter 0) to increase precision a bit more.

The original poster does a great job explaining how to make a permanent change to your mouse polling rate. Here is how you can test-drive new mouse settings "on the fly".

sudo modprobe -r usbhid && sudo modprobe usbhid mousepoll=x

Replace x with your new mouse rate as provided by the OP:

1 = 1000Hz
2 = 500Hz
4 = 250Hz
8 = 125Hz
10 = 100Hz (Default)

Once you find a setting that works well, edit /etc/modules and make your permanent changes there.
