My hope is that the delay is due to them fixing bugs that will cause the client and/or server to crash after a short amount of usage.
It wouldn't do anybody any good to get a test version that crashes every 5 minutes.
Honestly, I thought it was ambitious to insinuate (if not actually saying) that a beta release would be made available by Christmas going by when the licensing news was released. A test version made more sense.

You will at least need the OpenGL features required even if wine did emulate everything.

Word from the developer is that it requires pixelshader 9.0 which according to wikipedia it is supported on OpenGL 2.1.
I guess the drivers should be fully compliant to 2.1 (old id tech 3 was only 1.1 if I'm not mistaken).
