Hi there,
as I understood, the reason for urte not being open sourced was the licence policy of the quake engine (or game content).
Now that Urban Terror HD is being built based on the newly freed Ureal engine, does this restriction still hold true? Are there any other reasons for not open sourcing the game code?
People are complaining about 'slow' progression of development all the time. Opening up for some community contribution could speed things up. The core maintainers could still be very restrictive, deciding what goes in and what not. At least for me that would be perfectly fine ;)
Keep on the good work folks!

UrTHD is currently based on Epic Games' ShooterGame example project. It speeds up development for us but the counter party is that we can't release the source code that is owned by Epic Games. It may change in the future but it's currently unclear: Unreal Engine 4 is now free for everyone and the source code is in theory accessible to everyone but their Github repositories are still private and afaik their licences still do not allow publicly sharing the source code.
Anyway if you want to help you are free to join us like JohnnyEnglish who recently joined the team to work on level design, map objects, textures... just email me your portfolio and a small resume. :)
You could also download Unreal Engine and the ShooterGame example project and start coding stuff. Anyone can help now and you have all the tools you need!

To add.
There is no need to release anything as to game code as UE4 is modular in design (Star Tech Tech) that “anything†made 3rd party can be plugged into instead of integrated in the same manner as idtech3.
The need of course is to ensure anything going into HD becomes property of FS or licensed in a way that does not interfere with future plans as to copyright concerns which is the number one reason 4.2 will never be released on Steam.
So this modular approach does open the door for those wising to contribute if at least what is being contributed falls under Epic's fair use licensing as to working assets or said person is willing to sign a contributors agreement.
As Barbie suggested if your interested in helping out the first thing to do of course is to grab UE4 and the Shooter example and start playing around and if something that we can use feel free to contact Barbatos and we will look at it on a case by case bases.
The flip side.
If what you make is that good you could sell it on Epic's marketplace so its a win win.
