Are ID bans still a thing? Rate Topic: -----

I just realized there's no qkey text file in Urban Terror's game folder anymore. 4.2 had this, but 4.3 apparently doesn't? If a user isn't logged in/authenticated, how can admins even ban that person, then? I kicked and banned a guy by IP range but he keeps coming back.

UrT still has a qkey. However:

If you ban someone via ID/qkey they can just delete the qkey and restart the game, it will automatically recreate a qkey.
If you ban an IP range and its "too narrow" they might get lucky when resetting the connection their to their ISP (of course assuming they dont have a static IP to begin with).
And if you ban someone via auth, he can just logout and reconnect.

So unless you ban a rather vast IP range (possibly an entire country) or set your server to auth only (so only authed players can connect) there is no way for you to permnently ban a player
Sorry for my bad spelling - I am still asleep. :)

It does? Where, exactly? Like, I searched the entirety of the game's folder and couldn't find it.

You aren't searching correctly then. Example of correct search:

find /home/user -name '*qkey*' -print

Also, depending on your operating system and how you launch the executable, the file you are looking for may be in a hidden directory.

That's super confusing. What even is that string and where do I put it?

Shouldn't the qkey file be inside the game's folder? More specifically, inside the q3ut4 folder?

that "string" is a bash command to search your linux user folder for a file containing qkey.

On windows the qkey is NOT in the q3ut4 folder but in the same dir as the executable (using the default binary this would just be one directory up). I would assume (though i could be totally wrong here) it the same for linux.

Also note difference between fs_basepath and fs_homepath. The game does not require your q3ut4 folder being in the same location as your executable. Even some custom windows binaries by default use the windows users documents folder instead of the games basepath.

I still don't see it.

Inside the "UrbanTerror43" folder, there's the following files:

The "q3ut4" folder
Quake3-UrT (which is the executable)
Quake3-UrT_Logitech_Game_Recognition
Quake3-UrT-Ded (which also seems to be an executable of sorts)
updater-cfg (which is an Excel file)
UrTUpdater (which is the updater)

That's it. That's all there is. Is this a bug? Shouldn't the qkey file be in here?

Interesting. Its there for me and its actually getting "recreated" if i delete it. Did you ever actually start the executable?
The Ded executable is the dedicated server (console) executable, used to run a gameserver.

On a sidenote: enable showing file extensions in the windows explorer. (also why the fk is .xml linked to excel...)

Yep, I did. Also enabled hidden files and extensions but nothing changed. This is really weird. Even if I had deleted it accidentally it should be recreated, shouldn't it?

Did you check the AppData directory? My qkey is located at
C:\Users\Gost0r\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\UrbanTerror
for example.
