basically, on fov > 90 you get
  • more information on the sides
  • less information on the centre (harder to aim in front of you since things become smaller in that area)

on 90
  • things look 'right' (no fish eye lens effect)
  • but less information on the sides
  • easier to aim in front of you (no shrinking in the centre)

Not entirely correct.

You also miss information top and bottom with 90 degrees.

And i'm going to say this again: The Wikipedia link you give doesn't cite any resources!

In the lens context, it's peripheral, that's what I meant by "sides", all "4" sides.

Fair enough. But you didn't specify that and also, in game rendering we're not using lenses.

But w/e.... let's stick to agree to disagree

What exactly do you disagree with? The basic stuff is that high fov makes things shrinked in the centre and more info peripherally, and 90 makes centre 'right' but less info peripherally. Hence it could be presented to gamers as the more it is the more info surrounding it but harder to aim in the middle.

Subjective, players with low sensitivity (on a 16:10 or 16:9 display) does not necessary have problem with that.

It's smaller, it's obvious.

Technically, it's impossible to [script-]zoom [without aggressive hacks] since

  • 90 is the 'right photo'
  • below 90 is only used internally when literally zooming with snipers
  • >90 is a distorted 'fish eye lens effect' that makes things smaller on the centre but gives more info on the sides

['things smaller on the center' is in some sense in opposition to zooming.]

I suspect those playing gametypes that rely on aiming, notably TS, TDM and FFA, are in a disadvantage going above 90, unless they go a little, but it would certainly be a disadvantage when being on 110 and they are in a lot of 'mid-range' situations against others on 90.

[I would give it more weight on 'defenders of CTF' for instance that rely a lot on 'peripheral info'.]

You have FOV settings in almost any game. And I don't really see a cheat in it. It would be if only certain people could use/change it, but its not. Anyone can use it. Most Games have a setting to change FOV, just like UrT and I don't see why the FOV should be locked.

If for anything one "could" set in his Game, the other says he don't and because of that for the guy that don't it feels like cheating, hell then noone should have any setting one can use that others "might" not. Its pointless to discuss it !

One uses 90, one uses more. Anyone has a choice, a choice anyone can do for himself. If that is a cheat now, well then you might not give anything to configure at all in a game.

If there isn't an issue, it seems its always easy to make one, isn't it ? How about not ?
