Some shaders use a mathmatical formula that go by sinewaves, squarewaves, sawtooth, and triangle waves.
You don't really need to know about the waves(but it could help), just which values do which.
When I make a shader I try to find one in another map that resembles one that I want and then I edit it for what I need.
The shader manual is very helpful thou, it's helped me tons of times.
terrain blending is still confusing to me even thou Sock has a great tutorial.
