ATI's Optimized Texture Filtering Called Into Question
ATI is cheating on trilinear texture filtering with the new X800, according to posts in Internet forums. Others ardently defend ATI. But what is really going on here?

..how does it affect your game? Please comment...

That's bull$hit.
Everyone with an X800 wants anisotropic filtering enabled and not just trilinear...
Trilinear is dead.

This is not about anisotropic filtering. You gotta read the article. It is about the fact that ATI has actually lied to its customers about them doing REAL trilinear filtering - which they obviously don't anymore. Last card doing this was the first version of the 9800XT.

it's an adaptive method of filtering. why do you need full trilinear on certain textures that wont benefit from full trilinear?

the fact that this has been in place for about a year on the rv360 and no one has noticed it shows that there is almost no quality loss.

everyone at tom's have no knowledge about 3d technology. as a matter of fact, everyone in the big 3 (toms, anand, [h]) knows nothing (except for brent at [h]).

this is much, much different than nvidia's fixed mode brilinear filtering. dont even make the comparison.

edit: and it is "real" trilinear filtering. it just has the quality of it staged back when it isnt needed. you shouldnt be able to notice a difference.

the only thing ati has done wrong is not giving people the option in the control panel to disable the optimizations.

True.

Now that is a blatant generalization. Be careful with such judgements. How would you know?

True, the adaptivity of ATI's model is well thought out.

And having a terribly bad PR coordinator.

because they have very little technical knowledge about 3d technology. they also have very subjective reviews and their comparisons are never "even". especially in the nv3x days. they lost a lot of respect there (as did anand and [h]).

their pr isnt bad. i thoguht they actually handled the situation well after it surfaced. i'm still waiting for that option though (i doubt it will ever come out). their pr is much, much, much better than nvidia and that a*hole brian burke.
