Try fraps. Its alot better then doing it the quake3 way. Instead, it outputs it directly to avi. Not bad for a free program.

I know the software he is refering to, and it does exist. Alas I lost it in a system crash a while back, and no joy, have not found where to download it again.

It converted the demo to avi complete with sound. At the version I had did.
