i have a radeon 7500 and fedora core 1 w/ 2.6.4 kernel and i am having trouble getting 3d acceleration working. the main is i have no idea what to do, i found that dri project and gatos. can someone point a brother in the right direction.

my obvious answer will be: downgrade to the 2.4 series kernel. Another thing is if You compiled DRI and apriopriate module - radeon (section dri).
Really need more details like Your kernel configuration file (just the part DRI) and XF86Config file, in order to help You.

In the kernel configuration look for character devices (under decive drivers in 2.6), there make sure to enable XFree direct rendering manager and to compile the radeon driver.
(u could just try 'modprobe radeon' since fedora will most likely have the module already)
Then under /etc/X11/XF86Config make sure it says
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
and make a DRI section that says:
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
So if you have radeon module loaded (check this by doing 'lsmod') and made the changes to XF86Config you can restart X and try out glxgears or quake3
