On that server I get this :-

Generally it's been better today and yesterday than it has for a while, however it's always been fine in other games anyway. I know UrT has different netcode than other games but I wonder why this older game with minimal requirements, compared to newer games, is giving me so much trouble, not to mention giving me trouble now when a few years ago I played UrT on an older PC with a slower connection and it worked perfectly ??

Hop 2 is VERY unstable.
From the first tracert:
2 32 ms 28 ms 7 ms 10.27.180.1

From the second:
2 37 ms 65 ms 8 ms 10.27.180.1

You can see the effects across the rest of the hops. The second tracert has the last hop with one ping sample at 17 ms (and another sample with over 2x that ping). Yet in between hops are spiking as high as 96 ms. It's very, very likely that the second hop is overloaded, and since your packets are always passing through it (the second hop is usually a switch at your local ISP), any time it spikes, that packet is lagged. If it's delayed leaving the second hop by 50 ms, well, how's it going to travel back in time 33 ms by the time it hits the server to give you a nice 17 ms ping?:P I can explain this in more detail if you're confused, but suffice to say, you have a laggy node you have to pass through, so you're going to be getting lag on all servers, even though everything after that node is probably not lagging at all.

Your ISP is clearly at fault here.

UrT is heavily dependent on a stable connection. If you don't have a stable connection, you'll suffer. Most servers employ antiwarp, which "smooths out" ping spikes by ignoring them. This makes you appear to move smoothly to other players (without antiwarp, if you get a big ping spike, your character will physically warp around, making it hard for other players to track your model), but fucks you over. It's to punish people who purposely induce warping, but some of us just have awful connections and get ping spikes anyway. The default tolerance for antiwarp is 50 ms, so if the difference between 2 packets arriving at the server is greater than 50 ms (plus the delay between sending packets, which would be 1000 ms/<your cl_maxpackets>), your last packet gets ignored, and you get a nice black bar in your netgraph. Real fun.

PM me with the model of your router and I'll give you some tips.

if that's true it might be beneficial to try to see if it can route otherwise if connecting to another game server; though I doubt it if it's so soon.

though, I'd have more hopes from a new IP (by just disconnecting from a dynamic IP account); my ISP is so chaotic in this; I disconnected the IP for some random reason and I noticed it game about half the ping on a server (that didn't have necessarily a connection problem before) just by changing IP

If he PMs me I'll tell him how to force an IP change with a static IP. Don't need to tell n00b cheaters how to do it too. :-P

Hmm, OK I thought I knew how to force an IP change on my router but it doesn't work ...

pff smart enough to use a hack smarth enough to cycle the ip out

here is the Fool Proof way to get a new ip on cable modems
login to your routers web interface >

find something like clone mac address enable it > enter a new mac ( for example 00:F2:C2:13:37:F3 would be a acceptable mac as would 00:22:D3:32:B2) click save
then release the DHCP via the routers web interface) Then ( and Don't skip this step ) Unplug Your Cable Modem From the wall and From the cable Line Wait 45 seconds mean While unplug your router for 30 seconds plug the router back in wait for it to come back up Plug the modems power in first wait 10 seconds then screw the cable back into thet modem reconnect the modem to the router and you SHOULD have a new Ip block

Ugh fine, if you're going to post how, at least don't make it so time consuming.:P

Set the new MAC in your router. This should require it to reboot. It should gracefully shut down giving you time to power cycle your modem. You only need to remove the power cable. When the router has rebooted and is sitting at the login screen or whatever it does after a reboot, plug the modem's power back in. You only need to interrupt its power it off for a second or so to cause it to clear its RAM. Your router should now give you a new WAN IP. Sometimes you might need to do DHCP release and then renew to get it; my Dlink required this, but my WRT54gl on DDWRT doesn't.

No need to unplug your coax cable or wait more time than it takes to reboot the router. You do not need to unplug the router either. Whole thing takes less than a minute.

OK, I'll give it a go, DHCP release / renew kept giving me the same IP and I was concerned changing the MAC address would cut me off completely. I was under the impression my MAC address is registered with the cable company and changing it would disable my connection, but I guess if I write down what it is currently I can always put it back if things go tits up. :)

what are you on about. i just hit 'disconnect' in a linksys and then 'connect' again in its status page and it usually gives a new ip.

Well you must have some garbage Greek dsl.

Your MAC address is not what your ISP cares about usually. Some ghetto ISPs maybe do, which is what MAC Address Clone is intended for - if you swap routers or add a router, you can copy the old router or the modem's MAC addy and your service won't get fked up by the technologically backward ISP. But most ISPs now use some code or something bound to the modem to recognize customers. I mean, if your ISP says something, just say you bought a new router. :-P
