I just tried the fur and it does make interesting grass.

Looks great. One thing is that I think I see the brush edges as the lightmap is cast across it. This article describes how to correct it. Page 2 info on nonplanar and shadeAngle are all you'll need. Keep shade angle low (45) to start and adjust to get desired effect. The rest of the article is for terrain blending (seamless blend of multiple textures) if you want to go that direction.

As for grass, run around the stock maps and see if there are better grass textures that you like and use those. Also, this article is a different method (without dotproduct2) on terrain blending.
