Let us, the community, build the groundwork for an Urban Terror HD (4.2) Software Development Kit (SDK).

This is the first stage of a few. Lobbying for a new solutions forum section has failed, so it is time to step things up. This thread is a refocusing effort to all Urban Terror developers in the next generation of the game. The content should be geared towards the green noob, the amateur, the experienced, and the proven.

The ultimate goal is to have a single entity of information that is redistributable, scalable, easily maintainable, easily accessible, and partially decentralized. This could be a wiki, a downloadable installer, a sticky forum post, etc. The resulting work would be presented to Frozen Sand for indoctrination to be referenced as the official UrTHD SDK. In other words guys and girls, this needs to become the absolute best single source for that which is Urban Terror HD development.

For the purpose of this thread - NON-RESPONDENT CONTRIBUTORS MAINTAIN ONE POST.
This will help avoid a lengthy thread. Request contributor posters to be more specific, or cite better references, in individual responses. A simple note of dispute to information will save everyone from a thread hijack situation that can be sorted out in later phases.

To begin, we need content.
Post to this thread, your fully qualified descriptions of the relevant material, including links/informational references:
  • UrT HD specific material
  • Editors, free and commercial
  • Tools, free and commercial
  • Methods and techniques
  • Resource paks (texture, model, sound, etc)
  • Previous forum posts with answers and solutions

Examples.
If you have found a solution within a post, link directly to that response
How to increase your maps' popularity.

Tools example with description
Tool: bsp shoe
Purpose: This is an application that lets you look at a .bsp file and shows you all the assets it uses.

Relevant information pertaining to starting as a new mapper or other developer
Tutorial post: Links for getting familiar with building a map
** Warning - this example could be presented more clearly with a pre-parsed index and description of the linked links.

What should not be posted:
  • Quake3 related content
  • Legacy Urban Terror content
  • ioUrbanTerror specific content
  • Urban Terror content that is not transitive to UrTHD
  • Copyrighted or legally intellectually protected content

At a point in the future, all posted information here will be digested into the second phase where categorization and proofing takes place, as well as a discussion of the best and most practical medium to facilitate the SDK would be.

Take care in your posts, using proper spelling, grammar, with appropriate formatting. FrozenSand members are obviously invited to contribute as well.

Help bring forth the future of Urban Terror!

The Urban Terror Mappers Wiki
Started by Delirium with the help of others, it serves as a starting point for a Padawan mapper to be a single source.

Conversations of related interest: FAQ

On Wiki's:
(05:58:46) <+solitary> they totally should add a wiki :D
(05:59:26) <@FSK405|wily_duck`> agreed, although a wiki isn't a sdk
(05:59:42) <+solitary> aye but it could contain tons of documentation which would otherwise need to be included in the SDK

Having an online Wiki to contribute documentation to will be beneficial, IF a single officially supported source can be arranged. This means, and no offense at all to Delerium, until the equivalent of say wikidev.urbanterror.info exists, we can not trust the continued, sanctioned existence of the wiki source. We've seen the fall of the6thfloor, urbanmappers, and numerous other community pillars. Until this content can be nailed down in FrozenSand proper domain, any linked wiki can only be considered internet-at-large.

On Platform-Specific Tools:
(02:43:56) <johnps> multi platform? I personally only use linux
(02:44:06) <FSK405|wily_duck`> yes definitely multi-platform

We have people on all types of platforms. While one tool may not support all platforms, it would be good to know what you may use as an equivilent on another.

What should I post here?
This is a question I've gotten in several forms this past week. Post anything which you feel would contribute towards future urban terror development. There's plenty of existing assets that already are used in 4.1 that have significant relevance to 4.2 (for instance Null's Particle Studio) which need to brought up in this thread. One of the key principles you need to hold will be imagining what you might expect from a real game studio pipeline, and how those things make the development of the game or levels or assets quicker and smarter to build.

About
Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of
useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the

GIMP
Open-Source image editing program, needs a bit of time to get used to, but it's a really powerful tool.
Also available on all major platforms, which may be a plus for some of us. :)

Blender
Probably the hardest tool to learn, but also mighty as hell. Unfortunately the new beta versions don't have too much exporters right now (changes in python api).
The 2.4x versions have MD3 and ASE exporters.
I should note that 2.5x is WAY easier to use than previous versions. As long as you are creating mapmodels you're probably better off using 2.5 for modelling and then opening the .blend file with 2.4 and exporting it to MD3/ASE.

SimonOC.com
The website of a very talented level designer, he got a lot of great tutorials, textures and even some models there.

CG Textures
Huge collection of textures, free to use in maps. There's a 15mb download limit per day. (Which is pretty high actually, never hit it while mapping)

Mayang's Free Texture Library
More textures, 20 downloads per day maximum.

Q3A Skybox Collection
Some skyboxes originally made for Quake 3, but maybe someone can use them for UrT

openfootage
Awesome site for textures and references.

Philip K's material tutorials
Nice tutorials for texture creation, though not all apply to Urban Terror.

freesound
Huge collection of sound effects, can only recommend it.
In relation to this: Freesound Game Dev Soundpack

katsbits.com
Mainly focused on Blender tutorials, but in level design direction. Really great place to getting started, also has some models.

About Freesounds... I think we should ask for permission to use sounds, isn't it? I never downloaded them for this reason, I mean, it's not easy to get in contact with them.
