Hi Everyone,
I've been playing urban terror for a long time (almost 10 years, I think). I've been using linux lately and urban terror works well on my laptop with a nvidia 9300m gs on low quality (ubuntu 10.10) but I'm going to be building a new computer (core i5-2500k probably, w/ ubuntu/debian) and I was hoping to be able to run UrT at higher quality at 1920x1200 at 100+ fps. I've been using the bumpy optimized rendered of late.
I've had issues with tearing in the past of the graphics/videos so I'd like a graphics card that will work well. I tried asking on phoronix but the thread degraded into a discussion on who has better open source drivers but I don't mind using the proprietary drivers I just want something that works well and isn't super expensive (I want to stay around 60-80$ if possible!. I should be able to as
I also don't really care about nvidia/AMD/ATI - I just want it to work for UrT and HD video on linux!
I've looked the at the nvidia 440 series and the radeon 5570, I don't think I should need the latest and greatest. Any suggestions/experience would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much,
s0rce
TLDR: need to pick gfx card for UrT under linux, 60-80$ NO TEARING/weird stuff, good 1920x1200 100+ fps. Thanks!

Well you dont want ATI/AMD (In before people start raging) on linux it is terrible.
Anything up from GT220 up will give you 1920x1080 and easily 100fps with mitsubushi's build (tested it).
So you can use that as a sort of bar to decide what you might want to purchase.

im using the gt 220 and get stable 125fps on all the stock maps (1920x1080, various distros). in general urt seems to be more on the cpu-heavy side, the gpu seems to be less important.
as far as i found out so far the sync-errors/tearing are not only a question of the gpu. the combination of the screen, the gpu and the connection between the two seems to have an impact aswell, not to mention the drivers.

If for UrT almost anything off the shelf will do the job with out spending an arm or leg.
A Nvidia card would be a good thing and 99.9% of the developers use this brand so your going to get a performance boost based on the equipment that we develop the game on.
Numbers wise and uncapped we are seeing FPS ranges in 400+ range and load rated under MD5 between 60 and 80 FPS.
If anything though if you currently have good game performance under 4.1 then there is a good chance you would only need to upgrade the video card.

Got real evidence to back up that statement or are you just parroting the NVIDIA zealots?
Because from my own experience, both are equally bad/good.
Linux gamer since R300 and NV1x.

Clearly you took that personally and got mad.
I never said the cards were bad.
I'm talking about support and getting them to even work. If you try tell me AMD/ATI work just as well if work at all as well as Nvida then you are probably a troll/fanboy.
Nothing wrong with ATI cards at all, just shitty drivers in general.
Edit, I mean work as well/at all in linux, before you start.
