Upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal just a bit ago and now UrT won't start up anymore. I try to launch it and absolutely nothing happens, same with the windows version if I try to use WIN.

Been trying to help him with this earlier. It's an issue that was found a year or two ago in VLC Media Player with ATI cards, he's got a nvidia card.

I don't know if he's updated his drivers yet, that's my suggestion man.

You're running a 64 Bit right?
Try installing libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 (in case you use a Nvidia Card).

Explanation: This provides 32 bit openGL libraries for 32 bit applications.

Ubuntu 11.04 32bit with Urban Terror was fine with me. But I had CI all the time and bye Ubuntu.

Strangely, I'm having EXACTLY the same problem as the thread starter, but I run Ubuntu 10.04.

I haven't played UrT 4.1 under Ubuntu for perhaps 6 months...and, now, I can't!

Double-clicking the executable causes exactly nothing to happen. The most I see is a "zombie" ioq3urt process listed in System Monitor.

Sometimes I get an error message claiming some kind of video error the last time I ran Urban Terror (well, yeah, I guess having NO VIDEO is kind of an "error"), but even trying to run the game in "safe video settings" does nothing further.

What the heck is going on?

To answer the usual questions:
1) yes, the executable is set as an executable
2) using 32-bit Ubuntu and a 32-bit Urban terror executable (yes, the Linux one, simply called ioq3-urt)
3) never had a problem with Urban Terror 4.1 simply running before. Obviously something changed, unknown to me, in the last few months that is now preventing it from working.
4) all the Urban Terror files are in a subfolder of my user /home directory (about 1.8 GB worth what with all the custom maps I've downloaded in the past)
5) Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ vid card, Nvidia proprietary drivers 270.41.06 installed.
6) Kernel version is 2.6.32-31-generic-pae (fairly recent).

A bit more info - contents of ~/.q3a/q3ut4/crashlog.txt:

Quote

ioq3-urt for linux i386 (Dec 25 2010 10:35:12)

SDL_Init( SDL_INIT_VIDEO ) FAILED (DirectFBCreate: Initialization error!)
Setting r_mode 9 failed, falling back on r_mode 3
SDL_Init( SDL_INIT_VIDEO ) FAILED (DirectFBCreate: Initialization error!)

Pretty sure I've seen that problem before. Wonder whether it's what's afflicting the OP?

Still don't know what the problem actually was, but I have Urban Terror working again.

All I really did was muck about with the Nvidia drivers. First I installed an older version (173.something), then reinstalled the more recent version (270.whatever).

Something about one or more instances of resetting X config to default must have fixed whatever the problem was, because now Urban Terror runs as before.

I'm now having a scratchy sound problem in Ubuntu in general, but that may be hardware (very, very old speaker set).
