I am wondering how will work AutoCAD as mapmaking tool :D or someone will advice me not to do it ?
AutoCAD is not produced for such needs , of course I know , just I was wondering how good/bad can be for the task .

Scroll the list.... or do you think that 3ds was born on a tree?

I didn't say that I am so not informed about the options , I meant that I am curious how AutoCAD will do the job , experiment actually .

You could but the need for that level of detail you would be best off sticking with a 2d paint program like Photoshop. This is personal opinion of course as any tool can be mastered.

As for saving your changes edits are made in the frame buffer so the moment you exit by deselecting whatever tool you are using you are asked how you want it saved. Could be to a Photoshop file, directly to the applied texture or you can save to a unique file.

I agree a 2D image editing is more suitable for this kind of editing but sometimes you really need to see how something looks like in 3D cause a flat image just doesn't shows things right.
Best example would be adding a rust patch on a corner, when i work on the texture in photoshop i have 4 vertical sides. Of course i can't have all 4 connected so there is always a seam. In PS painting in the rust over a seam can be tricky. I can either split the decal in 2 and do my best to align the 2 parts on vertical sides properly, or i can do an offset which means i have to isolate the part of the UVW and transfer it into separate project and work on it there.
Either way it's a lot of fiddling. Now if i can use a rust patch brush and it bends around the corner without too much distortion i can apply the decal in one hit on both sides and not worry about the alignment on the seam or have the need to jump between PS and max all the time cause i missed by 2 pixels and it looks bad.

What about MudBox? It's also made by AutoDesk so it's compatible with 3DSMax
