You're trying to connect to a 4.1 server.
There is currently no proper way to distinguish them.

You're probably running 4.1 then - check the version number in the main menu.
Old config files can be used just fine, the problem are the old zpaks. You'll need to move them somewhere else if they are in the same folder as your configs.

At first look this seems to be a problem relating to how Vista and Windows 7 likes to put things under the document folders that switches the path to this folder instead of using the one under your game directory.
This seems to be a conflict between an already installed version of 4.1 that after starting the game Vista or 7 is being so kind as to link to this folder and if you attempt to switch to a different server 4.2 you get the invalid path error.
I had the same problem and was able to solve it by deleting the urbanterror folder under documents>games and re-downloading 4.2 using the updater and the problem is solved for me.
Give this a try and see what happens. Also 4.1 might rebuild the folder breaking the 4.2 path again so if someone could be so kind as to check this out I can tag it as a must fix now so it can be pushed in the next update.

Just to explain things a bit more in detail.
An invalid path is usually caused by either Vista or Windows 7 creating a games folder and as an exmple user-name/documents/games/urbanterror and then setting a system wide link to that folder.
Some might be familiar with the problems of finding your screenshot folder under the directory in which the game was installed that landed up under documents instead.
In DOS terms through this would be like the old system path setting of path = c:/ user-name/documents/games/urbanterror and no mater where you were directory wise the first place the operating system would look is what's in the system path and if it does not find it there, in the case of a game path, you get an invalid path error.
This is a problem we are looking into to prevent Vista or Windows 7 from deciding where things should go and where to get them from but for me to correct the problem I deleted the urbanterror games folder and reinstalled 4.2 and everything works just fine.
Feel free to add.

All you need to do is create a new directory for 4.2. I've still got 4.1.1 on here as well, and I'm on Vista. I just set up an overall parent directory, then have one for 4.1.1 and another for 4.2 inside it, then installed this into the 4.2 one.
Randomness is everywhere...
