Hello everyone,

after a server switch the new dedicated public server seems to have some lag issues with IoUrt 4.1.1

Specs:
2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 10:07:46 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
8GB DDR 3 1333 MHz Ram
2x 1 TB 5400 RPM HDDs

AMD Athlon™ II X4 605e Processor
4 core CPU with ~ 2.3 GHz

100Mbit network connection to the internet.

ioUrTded.i386
and
ioUrTded.x86_64
tested (see tries for details)

Description of the problem:

after starting the UrT Server everything works fine for ~6-8 hours.
the server is/was usally full (14-18 slots ) during that time, even if theres noone on it for that time the problem occurs.

After those ~6-8 hours the for nearly all of the players (from ~100 ppl only 1-2 dont have that problem) with different ISP, countries, connections
keep having small lag issues.

see the screenshots for a specific "view" before and directly after i restart the URT server.

What i tried and what did not work:

i setup the whole URT in the RAM, aka no HDD access at all to prevent HDD problems.

i disabled b3, and every other service on the server (only b3db and apache2 +ssh)

i increased com_hunkmegs up to 4GB.

i tried both executeables.

i even artificially tried to decrease quality of the network on the server to check if the problem is then shown more cleary.

it was only an addition of 10ms ping.

there is _no_ packeloss on the server.

there is not more than 10-15 % CPU load (only when the round starts)

overall load is <1% and ~5 % when people play.

i disabled logging (needed for b3) , i disabled g_logsync

sadly im out of ideas why this happens.

i can 100% confirm this looks not like a client issues, a lot of ppl (me included) have only a flux of ~1-3 to the server and stay beyond 50ms all the time.

i have full root access, this server is only for URT so if you need any additional information, have me test something, feel free to ask.

please keep in mind that the error happens only after a few hours.

for details: i start the server and b3 through a script which starts screen, but even if i manually start the server there is no visible change in behaviour.

please advise me what i could do to fix this.

thanks in advance

That does look weird, are you only running one server? any other game servers, database servers, webservers, VOIP etc?

also can you give us the output of:

Quote

cat /proc/cpuinfo

make sure your com_hunkmegs is not higher than 256, it is useless - I have got by on 128 for years now.

Have you patched your server against the latest DrDOS attacks also?

yes, on this server only runs ioUrt. There was a mysql server for the BigbrotherBot Database but even when is stopped the same behaviour occurs.

there are two pinned topics in these sub-forums, one with a list of tools for server admins, and the other a discussion topic on the latest attacks on game servers (DrDOS). You can find unofficial patches provided by myself here: http://www.urbanterr...up-guide-tools/ these patches are the same as the official ones except they include exploit fixes for an rcon exploit and the DrDOS exploit. These fixes are provided by Rambetter - a community friendly programmer that has contributed a lot of time to helping fix problems like these.

if your server is unpatched then you could see those markings on your lagometer if the server was under attack.

You may wish to check this area first since you don't know if you are protected or not.

done, patched version (i386) now online.

do i understand it correctly that you wrote this page too:

http://daffy.nerius.com/urtserver/

if so first: nice work for the howto:

2nd :

you might want to add following details:

In order to use sdl-config on debian squeeze you need following packets aswell.

make libsdl-dev gcc-multilib

gcc-multilib is obviously only needed on an x86_64 system trying to use the i386 version.

i will report tomorrow if lag is gone or not.

ps: the iptables command mentioned in the thread for "blocking" did ,at least not for me, solve the lag spikes.

luna705:/home/CasaTown# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
DROP udp -- anywhere anywhere udp dpts:27000:29000 state NEW recent: UPDATE seconds: 30 hit_count: 10 name: DEFAULT side: source
udp -- anywhere anywhere udp dpts:27000:29000 state NEW recent: SET name: DEFAULT side: source

With regards and thank you for your help.

no I did not write the page http://daffy.nerius.com/urtserver/ that was Rambetter the person who makes those patches available.
