Radeon is actually AMD, not ATI
The Radeon driver is the best performing FOSS graphics driver, period. Nouveau is a terribly performing FOSS graphics driver, due to the fact that Nvidia gives zero contribution to it.
Nvidia does have the best performing closed-source non-free driver, and it does perform significantly better than AMDs non-free driver on similar hardware. However, the AMDs non-free driver performs fine, and I have had zero stability issues with it.
AMD is moving towards opening up more of their graphics driver software, while Nvidia is continuing to contribute nothing to the open source community
