UrT suddenly crashes/quits when loading devmap Rate Topic: -----

Hey Mappers,
Urt suddenly crashes when i load the map i am currently working on. i start UrT as usual, type sv_pure 0 and g_gametype 0 and devmap mymap as usual, but UrT crashes while "Starting Up...".

Anybody know about this? I am on a Mac (10.8). Anybody know where UrT logs?

By default, urt doesnt log. you have to start the binary with the argument +logfile 1. Your logfile will then be written to the file qconsole.log (unless you specify differently).

Some reasons i could think of for this issue:
  • Your map is leaking
  • Your map is too big
  • You are exceeding the max entity count

There another reason, when u try to put own textures can crashes the UrT.
That passed me when I created my own textures.

Oh. right. if you use JPG but dont use the defaults that e.g. GIMP would suggest, the game would also crash.

With 'UrT crashes' you mean the game completely shuts down or you just go to the main menu? Because it is quite common to go to the main menu if there is something missing or you have a wrong setting in place. Usually you would get a window for that in urt though wich mentions the error, so if that's the case you can provide more details.

Thank you Guys for your constructive suggestions.

My Map got 867 total brushes and 343 total entities right now. I don't know if i 've reached a limit with that. I do use my own textures, but there was never a problem with these files before.
Yes, UrT completely crashes/quits, when loading the map, no error reporting. But it is definetly a problem with that map, other self-constructed maps are working fine.

Where do i find the qconsole.log (on my mac)?

I recall there was a limit of 256 entities, but it only counted certain types. It did not include light entities and some others. The top google result (a topic on this forum) suggests only brush based entities count towards this limit, which seems to align what i remember.

The logfile should appear in your q3ut4 folder. Now i dont know where the mac client puts its stuff, but it should be in your fs_homepath. Which is either in your users home directory or the install/extract directory urt is in. Definitely check the later first :)

Ok, update:

The map was too big, i think. I deleted a few last walls and entities i created and now the map works fine. It consists of 782 brushes and 326 entities now. So the net brush count (non entity) is 460. Maybe 512 is the brush limit. Unfortunately at this state my map is not finished at all. I think it would have got a net brush count of 2048 or even more, when it is finished,..

but i am just working with MacRadiant. No blender, no 3dmax. I think a lot of mappers overcome this limit by designing md3s in 3d-software and importing them as models...
maybe the way to go?

Your brush count can not be the issue. In my latest map I have 6670 brushes and 1600 entities and I haven't used blender or 3dmax and everything is working fine. You have to build a lot of stuff and it's normal to have a lot of brushes and entities.
