Hoping someone can help. Recent Windows update has left me with no control over gamma/brightness.
r_gamma no longer works, brightness in the GUI doesn't work and I've tried messing with all of the following:
seta r_gamma "1" higher value darker
seta r_intensity "3" higher valuer lighter
seta r_ignorehwgamma "1"
seta r_ext_gamma_control "0"
updated NVidia drivers, checked within windows and no love
even tried a clean install and same issue
hoping someone can help, thanks in advance

Hey tacos, the problem is a known Windows problem (version 1903), but they have rolled out a fix, which seems to have worked for many that reported it on Discord. Try to manually check updates in Windows, there should be another one you can install and fix the issue with!

Hey thanks for the reply. I actually updated Windows after this post, but no joy. I also updated the graphics card driver to the latest NVidia and also tried the generic Microsoft driver. Again, no luck.
Any other ideas? If a clean install didn't work, it seems like it has to be something with Windows.

Still no luck with this. Tried searching for the past few days, but no luck.
It appears that I no longer have any way to adjust brightness within windows display properties. I've also lost "adaptive brightness" option under power profile settings, both of which seem to be common issues among windows users.
Currently, the only way I have been able to resolve this is to switch to "Use NVidia Settings" under NVidia Control Panel and increase Gamma on the primary display while I want to play UT.
Pretty dumb, but at least I have a workaround. Hopefully, this is resolved in a future windows update.

I want you to know that this isn't on deaf ears.
I don't have this issue myself but others have come to me with the same problem, all with windows 10.
Most of them resolved on their own after a few weeks(!?), so if you do find a fix, please keep us posted and I'll do the same.

Did you ever manage to solve the gamma issue? I'm having the same problem and can't find a solution. Windows and Nvidia drivers are up to date.
Besides the gamma issue I also experience that water e.g. in abbey statue or casa fountain are not transparent but rather white. And also beams from the lights in uptown are difficult to see through.
I'd really appreciate if someone could share a solution for this.

This is still the workaround I'm using 2 years later. Windows updates and nVidia updates never did solve this for me. I heard there is some tweaked client for jump map players that did solve this for them, but I haven't found that client yet, nor do I know if it's usable for regular ctf. But *if* this is true, it at least suggests a client side fix is possible.
For what it's worth, I usually leave the nVidia window open while playing. I adjust the gamma but don't hit Apply. And when done playing, I hit Cancel to turn things back to normal for everything else. Saves a few clicks.
Edit2: is this it? forked client on github

Hallo,
this is year 2021. It is not Windows but Ubuntu 21.04. About the same problem. Since my update to Ubuntu 21.04 my UrbanTerror Window is too dark. GUI adjustment tries are of no effect. I have an HP laptop with integrated Intel HD Graphics.
Just before the update I noticed, when I returned from playing on my desktop, that it was way too bright. So I had to adjust it back to normal each time after playing, which was no problem. Not very sophisticated but just a matter of habit. At least I could play in good brightness.
Now I don't have to adjust my desktop brightness when returning from playing, but I can hardly see anything especially in dark maps. I would have preferred it, if it had stayed the other way round.
Any helpful suggestions and experiences?
Cheers
