As the layman as I am not pretending to know a thing about programming it really sounds like a waste of efforts, man-hours as well as unnecessary code to add a function to enable/disable visual pollution. Not to mention that there will be a lot of players that would not learn about it. It seems to me as a concept that if the visual effects are made first with gameplay in mind there will be low visual pollution by default, no need for a function to disable it. Also, good visual effects can provide additional valuable information that will render disabling it an utter obsolete option.
