I can assure you that everything works quite fine, just not Quake3. I can easily playback q3 music outside q3. As for the hardware: nvaudio supports everything up to 48kHz.

if you use KDE or Gnome, disable a sound server (arts).
Login as root, and type:
(kernel 2.4 series)
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
If you use kernel 2.6 series + udev:
vim /etc/udev/permissions.d/udev.permissions
locate all sound devices, change all permissions to 666.
:wq!

OK guys, I'm having exactly the same problem. When I start UT, it locks up with a 'chop chop chop chop' sound. When I finish the first tier in Quake3, it locks up too on the 'victory' screen, with 'clang clang clang clang'. In other words, as soon as music starts playing, the game crashes and the problem seems to be in Quake3 itself, not just UrT.
I'm running it under Gentoo, 2.6 kernel, ALSA driver. I tried disabling artsd, no effect. I have integrated AC97 sound on my motherboard and therefore I'm using the VIA 82C686A kernel module. All other games, like UT2004, Enemy Territory, ... work fine.
Does the fact that nobody posted anything in this thread during the last month, mean that the problem is solved? Or has everyone 'sploded due to total frustration?
