...sometimes a *lot* of textures.

Is this known, or is it just something weird on my upgraded-from-3.7 systems? (I play a couple of places on different boxes and they both exhibit the problem.)

For example, Zero final (a fairly recent pre-4.0 map) is missing lots of textures, lots of stuff is gray grids.

Kinda destroys the mood, y'know...

pre-4.0 maps are generally not compatible with 4.0. They need to have their textures and lighting updated.

Quick tip:

Wait for the maps to be redone (with permission of course) or declared dead and move on.

4.0 doesn't use any of the old q3a textures.  So any maps pre 4.0 that used generic q3a textures need to be redone with their own textures for 4.0.  As far as I understand it anyway.  Plus with new model sizes and such some things will need to be resized as well.

model resizing shouldnt have anything to do with it, but the fact that we needed to remove all q3 textures

New model size was in addition to my comment but anyway... yes, removal of q3 textures is what's causing his problem.
