this got it working (fedora core 2), of course you have to do it every time you reboot which kinda sucks.

Nah...
ALSA with Fedora 2 ...
There are 4 packages of ALSA.
Alsa-lib, Alsa-driver, Alsa-oss, and Alsa-utils
Remove the Fedora 2 driver (hell it's probably in the kernel)
and go to www.alsa-project.org and manually install all 4 packages
To compile and install only take about 8m for all of them combines.
Go in this order:
alsa-lib
alsa-drivers
alsa-oss
alsa-utils
Enjoy ... Oh, when you're done installing, type alsaconf as root and it'll probe everything for you ... then alsamixer to set your volumes then alsactl store to store the settings... k peace
