Since my geforce3 is litterally grinding to it's well deserved resting place amongst the rest of the historical hardware in my basement, I thought it was time to inform what 3D card you guys would recommend to buy next. (ati/nvidia/model)

I don't really care for directX 9 shaders since I'm in linux 99.9% of the time. Suggestions are extremely welcome.
(as are timedemo FOUR results from quake3, if u use standard settings you can easily compare for yourselves. /timedemo 1 and then /demo FOUR in the normal quake3 console)

I get 240 fps on my geforce3 using 800x600 high quality in 16 bit, dropping to 220 fps in 24 bit. (bear in mind this is the quake3 timedemo, fps are significantly lower in urt and ET).

I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce FX5900 AGP and a NVIDIA RivaTNT2 PCI.
I tested a ATI Radeon 9600XT one week before I bought the FX5900. The ATI driver suxx if you want to use Xinerama / Multiple Monitors. If you don't want to use multiple monitors I think the newest ATI drivers are ok... not as good as the NVIDIA drivers, but ok.
I'm satisfied with my FX5900... great 3D performance and sharp 2D picture.

A bit off my own topic here, but don't you think using 2 DRI compliant cards (like ati and older models such as the S3) would actually work quite well in multiple monitor ? If you use an ati + nvidia I imagine things go haywire since both got own drivers, but dri radeon works quite nicely from what I've heard. And possibly a 500 euro card would kick ass for sure :)

No, the fglrx driver from ATI cannot use Xinerama while using DRI. And I used ONLY the 9600XT with it's 2 monitor connectors (both NVIDIA cards build-out). This works flawlessly with Windows but not with Linux.

The NVidia drivers can use Xinerama and GLX at the same time (currently with 3 Monitors here - 2 on FX5900 and 1 on TNT2). That's the point why _I_ definitly like the NVIDIA drivers.
Another point for NVidia is the better WineX support.

If you have only 1 screen and don't want to use WineX, I don't know a reason why not to buy an ATI Radeon :)

I'm using an Nvidia Geforce4 and love the driver support that Nvidia provides for Linux users. I would go with an Nvidia card.

im using a gf4 ti4200 64mb at 550mhz [ocd] pulling an easy 120fps [maxfps set] looks great.. just ordered a ti4200 TURBO with 128m ram.. runs a slower mhz but should yield more staple fps and better quality.

I like my nvidia, they are always very active with updating linux drivers and offering support where ATI hasnt and its also a boat load cheaper to geta card capable of 120fps staple..

My rates are in 1024x768 high quality default setting.

I can't help sticking to Nvidia I got an e-Geforce 6200 256mb card and a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS 512mb card. They both work great for me.
