I'm speaking about textures that are just used for trim pieces. If done correctly it can work.

Sure, check out ut4_railed, that map has one of the highest resolution texture sets.

does it matter that much? Most consoles nowadays don't even use textures greater than 512x.

no, that would require re-skinning all the models i believe. real real pain in the ass.
