Hello all.

I've been playing Urban Terror on my Vista partition with no issues.  However, when I boot to Ubuntu, I get really high pings (250+) from most servers.  In Vista I get well below 100 on those same servers.

I've run tests at Speedtest.net from Vista and Ubuntu and get great pings (usually around 50).  I've also tested this from my home DSL connection and a T1 at work.

Also tried changing the data rate and packet settings in UT to no avail.

Any suggestions besides booting back into Vista to play?

Maybe a firewall or something messing around with your network in Ubuntu?

Any ideas on how I might find that out/or fix it?

If it is a firewall issue then there must be something I can change within Ubuntu as it works just fine in Vista.
I'm just not sure what could be changed and if so...to what.

<sigh>

Edit > I'm not sure that its a firewall issue as I get great pings from all other sources...avg ping from google.com (60ms), but I'm no expert,
so tell me if I'm wrong.

You can try with IPTABLES -F , that should clear all firewall rules.

I doubt that's the issue though. Ubuntu shouldn't come with any agreessive rules by default (especially ones that break common q3-type gaming).

And Linux is usually the King of Networking.

ps. Make sure you tried the same servers.

And check the ethernet driver (or other networking one related).

The firewall could be set to mess with massive UDP traffic (like a game), but not mess with ICMP pings. But yeah, if you're running a default setup, I don't see a reason why it would do that.

I've played UrT running Debian and Ubuntu with IPTABLES-Fw turned on. Router has a NAT-Fw. Pings around ~50 ms which is what to expect from my 1 Mbps DSL-Connection.
Try connecting your system directly to the internet with routers 'DMZ'-Setting and flush iptables rules. This is of course a security risk you should only so with a fully patched system. See if it makes a difference.
If it doesn't, install 'traceroute' and point to a server which is close to your location.
Another suggestion. Watch if update manager isn't running in the background the time you're playing. This will give you high pings.

So I tried running "sudo iptables -F" and it went through with no issues, but did not help.

A particular server I get good pings in Vista is "Fallin Angels" ip: 88.198.98.94.  In Ubuntu the ping ranges between 300-700.

I'd imagine its got to be a setting with Ubuntu.  If it were an external firewall, then Vista knows how to communicate with it I guess.

Update manager is not running in the background.  Compiz is turned off.  Closed Cairo Dock just in case.  Bleh.

Any other Ubuntu settings I might try without confusing me or my system  :-D

Did you ping from console?
Also try installing 'iftop'. Started from console it will show running connections and their bandwidth usage.
One stupid question: you didn't accidently started the .exe file instead of .x86?

Weird...ping from console and Network Tools gets no response.  Maybe a clue?

Running "sudo iftop -i wlan0" shows no traffic except web traffic when I load a page.

I assume I'm running the x86 as I used the .deb install from getdeb.net.  This problem also existed when definitely running the x86 on an old install a few months ago.  I just now decided to try and fix it.

I appreciate all the help so far!

Please check directly connecting (LAN) to the router.
Use UrT Download from this site (ZIP).
