Ubuntu
Geforce fx 5200

I'll be fragging away and every now and then the game will just close. no error messages. just closes.

I assume this is a graphics problem. Could it be my card overheating? or would that cause my entire comp to crash? is there anyway to give my Fan any more juice to stop overheating?

i'm gonna open here up and blow some dust out :D

I have a problem crop up every few weeks in ubuntu. so i might try linux mint. While its based off ubuntu its design to just work. which sounds good to me

Wow, 4rd post about a graphic card problem ... I guess it's a NVidia driver problem ?
You should downgrade to an older version, some people have fried their graphic card.

I've got the same, problem, and i kind of always have. The problem seems to occur faster when you type a lot in the console, e.g. commands or text to other users. Also jpeg screenshot fail (bogus colorspace input, from my head) nor does the AVI output work. Probably some library problem. But i've got a ssd disk now and urt boots/connects within seconds... i learned to live with it and hope with each version they fix it. Though i must add before 4.1 i never ever had it this frequent.

It also happens to me often when I type into console. So I tried running UrT from a terminal, and I noticed it exits with segmentation fault. But I haven't got a faintest clue as to what the cause would be.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, using GeForce 8400M G. I tried both version 180 and 173 if the driver, same thing, although I get far better fps with the older version 173 if the driver.
sudo make breakfast;

I've tried that too, in hope it would give me a bit of useful output. Over time I've notice some things, that SEEM related.

- how busy the server is / how much output there is in my console.
- You can actually see its going to crash a second before it actually does, imho look like console is lagging, then lag a bit more and then poof urt quit.

- i never ever had it on any of my own servers, then again, they are not the busiest servers there are (starting up).

- i didnt have it before 4.1 i think (this one i'm not sure about)

However if i dont type (including (team)chat) it usually never crashes, it has happened, but 99 out of 100 times its when i try to type in console. And most annoying moments also, either when you want to say No problem, after a teammate killed you. They simply think you (rage) quit.

I dont think its a driver issue on my graphics card, but god knows what it is related too. Even tried to run urt in debugger, but that was not really big success, very hard to reproduce problem when you want it to happen.

Hmmm, it seems weird. You guys should start UrT up in a console to get the full readout, or at least post the logs. This sounds like some variable crashing, or at least the engine. Because the Text/Console doesn't *really* use the graphics card that much, it is more likely to be a overloaded CPU or some inner Ubuntu problem. Send us the console logs and we'll take a peek!

Hi ProfSpaz,

Thanks for your post,

I've tried that in history, but it will not give any specific error as far as i remember. (also used it to check errors with the autodl, and jpeg screenshots, which gaves curl issues and bogus input colorspace) But when i have it again, i'll restart it from console and try to reproduce it and then copy/paste the last lines. But from my memory i believe it does not display much interesting.

Also read the new changelog on nvidia drivers, there is a line that catches my attention and gives me a bit of hope that could fix it if it is a graphics related issue, which i'm still not sure of.

Nvidia Linux Display Driver 190.53:
"Disabled the UseEvents option for GeForce 8 series and higher GPUs due to a problem that causes occasional short hangs. It will be re-enabled when that bug has been tracked down and fixed."

Again don't know if this is really utilized with Urt, but it's worth a shot i'd say. Will upgrade kernel and nvidia module later, need to plan that a bit. But what bothers me most with this problem, is that it's intermittent, and seems to depend per server for me if i have the issue.

Will update thread with my findings as soon as i have some,

Kind Regards

I'll see if I can't find a way to do a safemode UrT, with logging. I have a feeling this is mostly a Kernal problem, so I'll check to that. One thing to try is to startup a game like tremulous or anyother graphic intensive program. Thats a good benchtest for what the problem is.

Another thing to try is to build the source of ioUrt from http://ftp.snt.utwen...iourbanterror/.

The last thing I would do is check for any disk errors with a fsck command (not sure of the exact one, a quick search should do the trick), as this *may* be a disk error, though I don't think it is...

All the best

updated kernel and nvidia module. Will try shortly to reproduce the problem.

The download link are that just binaries to urt? (the ones on ftp of University of Twente?)

also ran a fsck just in case all is fine. But must note that im running urt from a SSD drive.

running now with last fedora kernel, 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64 from repo, and manual installed NVIDIA drivers 195.30

Okay on sexy's ctf it's fairly easy to reproduce for me. Busy servers, with lots of console and or players output seem to trigger the crash/exit faster. These are the last lines, after getting killed i wanted to type a :> smiley and press enter, before pressing enter already i notice the screen freezing, sound continuing for a sec or 2 and then it exits. (the sound continuing seems to be happening when urt is launch from a terminal)

Well a little google search did the trick.
I'm not to familure with the Linux status signals, so I looked it up, (http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/) this is very simular to a Unix problem we saw a while back... I think, this is a memory, or SSD problem.

Here's something to try, back up your data (Duh), open up the case and unplug the SSD, make sure now pins are damaged, and report to us the model, AND THE CABEL TYPE! Pop it back in, re-run urbanterror and see if it quits, if so tell us the info and we'll see whats up. Also how much RAM you got in this? And what type?

Good Luck
