Alon, you aren't alone. Many are having this issue with the nickname system, and the name checker system. The devs are looking into relaxing the system. (Or at least they were last I heard, devs/admins correct me if I'm wrong)
“And they'll say, ‘Man, what are you doing here?’”

It's something the Passport Devs are still working on :)

What's so hard about that? In (pseudo-)Java[0]:
if (isNickInDatabase(nick))
println("Nick already taken!");
else
println("Nick free to use!");
boolean isNickInDatabase(String nick) {
Connection conn = geDatabaseConnection();
Statement stmt = conn.createStatement(...);
ResultSet res = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT nick FROM nicknames WHERE nick='" + nick + "'");
if (res.next()){
conn.close();
return true;
}
else {
conn.close();
return false;
}
}

Warning! Registering any name that is intended to be an imitation, derivative, or considered to be inflammatory toward another player may result in your account being suspended.
The rules will only be lowered not removed.
This will probably stay.
m3lete = The nickname melete is already used by Melete.
This gets eventual removed.

On the other side 4.2 is not released and the fixing of this issue is not on first priority.

You can spew code at me all you want. Our system uses as a majority PHP, Java side validation is fine if you trust the client to be "truthful" in its response in this case, which of course we dont.
No this is a simple single VAR line REGEX expression :) the reason its taking so long is because that we must make sure we have the right mix. It will be done when its done and sinse 4.2 is not out then its no big issue.
