Hi, i was wondering since i often heard that urt.4 is mainly a cpu based game and not gpu.

So i went to the fallinangles_ctf server, and run gpu-z.
There i played 2 maps, presidio and metropolis.
I have win7/64bit, urt.4.1.1, hd6870 videocard (and good cpu/ram etcera)

I found out that according to gpu-z my desktop uses about 30-40 mb of my videocard. (i have a simple desktop)
And with urt.4.1.1 running it used max 228 mb.

I was wondering if using 228 ram (188 vram for urt) is correct usage.

EDIT:
Also, gpu-load was 72 procent (wtf?!), i dont know yet how to fully understand that number...

~150 MB sounds about right. UrT doesn't need much VRAM because of its simple textures.
VRAM usage also scales with resolution, so 1920x1080 should require more VRAM than 1280x720, all else equal, for example.

GPU load seems about right for a big server like FallinAngels. GPU load can be simply thought of as how much of your video card's potential is required.

An important comparison is that of CPU load and GPU load. A game routinely hitting 100% in one but not the other means that particular component is the limiting factor (or bottleneck) for higher frame rates. UrT is limited to 125 fps, so outside of a /timedemo benchmark, typically neither the CPU or GPU will be under full load because of UrT. UrT only uses one core, so "full load" for the CPU will be 25%.

One more point:
Modern video cards will decrease their clock speeds under light loads, for power-saving reasons. The GPU load is typically a readout of the usage relative to the current performance level of the video card, rather than its maximum. A 50% load at idle clocks might be scrolling around on a web page, while a 50% load at full 3D clocks might be rendering a full screen game. I notice my video card will fluctuate between 405 mhz core and 750 mhz core when playing UrT, because it sometimes drops into a lower performance state since UrT isn't particularly demanding outside of big maps and servers. This causes my apparent GPU usage % to fluctuate from around 20-30% with 750 mhz to around 60% with 405 mhz, but the actual load the GPU is tasked with has not changed.

tl;dr:
Those numbers are normal

Hi Don, thanx for the explanation and confirmation that my load during urt was okay.
Now i know why gpu-load was 72 %, while during playing crysis its 100 %.

I did a little testing on this subject and found these results:

Vram Usage:
-----------
Windows 7 Idle Desktop: 49MB
Urban Terror at menu screen @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 183MB
Urban Terror with 10 players @ 1920 x 1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 296MB
Urban Terror with 50 players @ 1920 x 1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 285MB (was different map so probably explains the drop)

Urban Terror on menu screen @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF 8x SuperSample: 290MB
Urban Terror with 50 players @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF 8x SuperSample: 393MB

so at most i was able to push this game to produce ~350MB of vram usage (on top of desktop usage) and that was with some pretty high settings too so most 512MB graphics cards will be fine for this game providing adequate spec of the rest of the card. also it should be noted that running a higher refresh rate will also produce a need for more Vram, theses tests where done on 60Hz refresh (standard) using 75Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz etc will push the card even harder and use more vram.

it should be noted also that super sampling of AA textures can have a compelling effect on GPU load and Vram load since it effectively is having to handle resolutions typically 4x higher than your monitor settings to produce the required result, for me this was like running 4x 1920x1200 monitors, this made my gpu go from an average of 8% GPU load to 49% GPU load and added about an extra 100MB into vram, this option is best disabled for those looking to squeeze more performance out of their graphics cards.

the pc spec i used while testing this was:

Intel Core2Quad q9550 @ 3.8GHz
8GB DDR2 1066MHz
Nvidia GTX480 1536MB
2x 500GB Western Digital RE5 SATAII Raid 0

Thanx for the testing nitro, good to know these things now.
