I did a little testing on this subject and found these results:
Vram Usage:
-----------
Windows 7 Idle Desktop: 49MB
Urban Terror at menu screen @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 183MB
Urban Terror with 10 players @ 1920 x 1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 296MB
Urban Terror with 50 players @ 1920 x 1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF: 285MB (was different map so probably explains the drop)
Urban Terror on menu screen @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF 8x SuperSample: 290MB
Urban Terror with 50 players @ 1920x1200 with 16xQ CSAA 16x AF 8x SuperSample: 393MB
so at most i was able to push this game to produce ~350MB of vram usage (on top of desktop usage) and that was with some pretty high settings too so most 512MB graphics cards will be fine for this game providing adequate spec of the rest of the card. also it should be noted that running a higher refresh rate will also produce a need for more Vram, theses tests where done on 60Hz refresh (standard) using 75Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz etc will push the card even harder and use more vram.
it should be noted also that super sampling of AA textures can have a compelling effect on GPU load and Vram load since it effectively is having to handle resolutions typically 4x higher than your monitor settings to produce the required result, for me this was like running 4x 1920x1200 monitors, this made my gpu go from an average of 8% GPU load to 49% GPU load and added about an extra 100MB into vram, this option is best disabled for those looking to squeeze more performance out of their graphics cards.
the pc spec i used while testing this was:
Intel Core2Quad q9550 @ 3.8GHz
8GB DDR2 1066MHz
Nvidia GTX480 1536MB
2x 500GB Western Digital RE5 SATAII Raid 0
