i made fire but its always solid. even when i use nodraw nonsoild. and if i make it trigger hurt, it disappears but still gives off light and takes up space. how exactly do i make fire that hurts you :(

You could try putting around it brushes textured with trigger_hurt and set the hurt-rate using the Entities window (press N).
In the end, the player won't never noticed if it's actually touching the fire, so if you put those brushes really near there won't be much difference.
Or maybe you could open the fire shader and add some damaging property, but I don't know if there is one.
