I'm not going to run a server in the immediate future but by testing I noticed I couldn't get bots to join etc. but the in-game server would always get it right the way I set it.

I took a look on q3config after the in-game server has run and quit, and I noticed many "ui_" options that didn't look familiar and I even tried to use q3config as a config file for q3ded as a server config file. It didn't work though.

Is there a way to at least do this?: Setting up an in-game server but not joining it, quiting and letting it run in the background.

nope, not afaik. you gotta use q3ded if you want server only.

check the manual for a basic server.cfg.

That's the cfg I was trying, the manual cfg.
