I figured it out. I had attempted to enter a server from the website. I wasn't sure if it even opened 4.2 or 4.1. It went right to the loading screen and gave me that error. Eventually I loaded the game from the .exe and saw the login where I entered the authentication key and voila! Thanks and many congratulations.

Do you use Windows?. Today I try to join a server and couldn't connect because of "server uses protocol 68".
Server runs a windows OS and I'm using Debian Wheezy 64b (gnu/linux).
