Playing UrT in Windows and Ubuntu
#1
Posted 15 August 2013 - 01:06 PM
I'm using Windows 8 64bit and Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (Dual Boot)
Using UrT 4.2 now. (Downloaded the Windows version). Can play in Windows. But I want to play from Ubuntu (from the same directory) too. So I tried to execting the Quake3-UrT.i386. Everytime I tick the option it automatically unticks itself. Tried to execut other exe files too.
So I want to know how do I do it? Playing Same UrT from both Windows and Linux. :)
Thanks :)

Try giving execution permission using root: from terminal type sudo chmod +x Quake3-UrT.i386

Like this right? (By opening terminal from the game folder?)
It looks like this:
And the file isn't executed. :( What to do now?

run it from the terminal and see if there are errors showing:
./Quake3-UrT.i386
You probably just need to install some libraries. Paste the output here if you run into trouble.

Yeah. I guess I don't have permission.
Output:
bash: ./Quake3-UrT.i386: Permission denied
What to do now? :(

ok, make sure you are working from your UrbanTerror42 folder. Do this:
first line makes all the Quake3-UrT files executable for everyone, the second line lists the files in their directory and their permissions. You should see something like this for the executable:
The important thing here is the 3 x's, which means that the file is executable for the owner, the owner group and for everyone. Now run it in the commandline
and see if you get any more errors.
sudo chmod a+x Quake*
ls -al
first line makes all the Quake3-UrT files executable for everyone, the second line lists the files in their directory and their permissions. You should see something like this for the executable:
-rwxrwxr-x 1 bob bob 1356286 Jul 6 03:22 Quake3-UrT.i386
The important thing here is the 3 x's, which means that the file is executable for the owner, the owner group and for everyone. Now run it in the commandline
./Quake3-UrT.i386
and see if you get any more errors.

Seems like I discovered whats wrong, the partition I'm using in Windows is NTFS. Linux can't execute file in NTFS partition normally.

I see. Well you can copy the whole directory to a linux partition, or could just move the executable and set the basepath when you launch it, eg.
cp /media/Stuffs_/Games/UrbanTerror42/Quake3-UrT.i386 /home/fahim/
chmod a+x /home/fahim/Quake3-UrT.i386
/home/fahim/Quake3-UrT.i386 +set fs_basepath /media/Stuffs_/Games/UrbanTerror42/Quake3-UrT.i386
last line will launch it in the terminal. Setting up the executable so it will launch with the basepath set automatically from the GUI is possible, but a little more complicated. Let me know if you want to do this and I'll post instructions.
Your other option is to set up a permanent mount with execute permissions for /media/Stuffs_, which involves adding a line in the /etc/fstab file. However, with this everything in your /media/Stuffs_ file will have the execute permission set.
