Downloaded and installed the Urban Terror Updater on Fedora 20/Cinnamon 2.0, all seems fine:
Your game is up to date.
Version: 4.2.017
Have fun !
So I click "Play!" - and then nothing. The play button register the keypress, then some time pass, and the window close. Nothing else, no errors, no game, nothing.
When I start the updater in terminal I get the message
QFile::open: File access not specified
Not sure if that's important and/or related.
A cursory look in /var/log/messages doesn't show anything abnormal.

Probably you have some missing game files that the Updater did not actually update. Try the Full Zip: http://www.urbanterr.../downloads/#1.4

Mmm… weird paths? Missing binaries? Binaries not executable? I’m not a Linux guy, sorry:-P
BTW, are you just reporting a minor issue (i.e. you can otherwise run the game just fine) or does this actually keep you from playing? You don’t have to start the game from the updater, there should be binaries there somewhere.

The installer created a q3ut4 directory filled with a bunch of .pk3 directories. No binaries that I can see. Yes this is blocking, there does not seem to be any other way to start it than through the installer.
I've downloaded the full zip but have not had time to give that a try yet.
