Ok let's start all over again. If you tried different things, you might want to delete your folder and start clean.
Step 1: Copy your game folder (UrbanTerror42), you don't want to modify the one you play with, since you are not authorized to play with modified game files.
Step 2: In your modUrbanTerror42/q3ut4, you'll find a zzpak009.pk3; everything concerning the menus is in there.
Step 3: Unpack or Open the pk3 with Winrar. The most convenient way I found to work on those menus is to Open the .pk3 without unpacking it.
Inside that .pk3, you have a "ui" folder. This folder is the only one you are interested in. It contains your .menus, as well as the "assets" folder, which contains the images used by the UI (cursor, background, etc...)
Step 4: Once you are in the "ui" folder, feel free to open .menu files with a text editor (that, I guess, you know...)(I highly recommend Notepad++, it's free). DO NOT CLOSE THE ARCHIVE (Winrar)
Step 5: Save your changes in the text editor. If you now go back to Winrar, a prompt should pop up, telling you that files in the archive have been modified, and asking you if you want to update the .pk3: Click Yes!
Step 6: Start the game. REMEMBER: You should be starting the game from your new UrT folder, the one you plan on working on.
WARNING: I strongly advice you start the game once before doing any modification, and Log Out. Even though I don't know how this works, there is a possibility you accumulate cheat points everytime you play with modified game files; I couldn't say if Frozen Sand handled that side of the story properly.
TIP: After working a long time on this, here is the best way I found (Win7), step by step:
- After copying your game folder, pin UrT (the one from the new folder obviously) to the taskbar.
- Open your .pk3/ui
- Open the .menu you want to work on
- Select Winrar window (remember, do not close Winrar before saving/closing Notepad. You'll see why when you make the mistake, cause it will happen)
- Minimize everything else, so there is only Winrar and Notepad windows shown up
- Once Winrar is the active window, right-click in the taskbar, and click on "Show windows side by side"
You should have Winrar on the left of the screen, and Notepad on the right.
Everytime you save your .menu file in Notepad, as said before, a prompt will show up in the middle of the screen. The "Yes" being on the left side of this prompt, and Notepad on the right side, you'll save 1 click every time :) It is not much, but it's important when you do the same move every 15 seconds, literally...
Now you're gonna edit, save, click yes on the prompt, open the game. Check your work, spam ESC, and all over again :)
@Iye: By the time he gets to the in-game menus, believe me he'll know that ^^
