Yes this is pretty much a flame about the general abuse of the term hacker by gamers. CHEATERS ARE NOT HACKERS! They did not hack anything, they did not write anything and they did not program anything. Many of the frozen sands team would be considered hackers and this game in a way could even be considered a hack, that does not make us as players a hacker nor does using someone elses cheat make you one. There cheaters damnit call them cheaters. There was a word in the english language to discribe such a person, lets learn it shall we c-h-e-a-t-e-r-s say it with me, cheaters.

It is indeed a shame how the term "hacker" became something so negative through cheating.

Well, actually an Hacker is someone who access a computer system by circumventing its security system. In computer world there are a lot of hackers subgroups (someone call them white hat, black hat, elite hacker etc...) but basically an hacker is a person who knows how a computer system works and how to evade security systems. Mostly hackers do not get profit with their job.

On the other hand there is another "type" of hacker, aka craker. Crackers are mostly hackers who violate systems to get profit from their job.

The "Hackers" we have on UrT (the one you mentioned with the name Cheaters) are identified under another name, also known as Lamers. The Lamer is the worst category ever ^^. Basically is someone who doesn't understand anything about coding, network systems etc. He just download prebuilt software and use it against a victim.

If you want more informations about hacking i suggest you to read the book The Art of Intrusion (Kevin Mitnick) and also to read something about the story of Kevin Mitnick and Tsutomu Shimomura

^^

I guess the use of the term hacker kind of derived from wall hacking and is now used to label any kind of cheater.

edit: I do like Mr.Click's word "Lamer" though, going to use that from now on
