Any other buttons then the F-buttons cause the demo to stop and go back to main menu. I have not seen UrT crashing on me at all.

It would be great if this could be fixed in ioQuake/UrT. It works very nicely in ET. You can show the scoreboard for example and don't have to be afraid of hitting a wrong key... There is also a small on screen help display (which can be hidden) listing a few hard coded key bindings.

Real-time divx compression isn't really an option, CPU's can't handle that.

why not? the avi recording runs all but not realtime here...

That's true. So maybe it could be possible. However, it's still not smart, cause you need high quality output to edit and then re-compress. Editing low quality and re-recompressing makes it ugly.

I think the ioq3 devs got this mentioned to them, but nobody has picked it up yet.

xvid/mp3 could be useful for small low quality videos and i guess it's simply because no one coded something like it yet. its usage would be limited though. the main advantage of /video is synced audio recording, not the compression, not even the single file.

You can just re-compress the mjpeg output to whatever you want, using virtualdub for example.

I think it's already very easy :) Especially compared to using 1000's of tga's and recording/syncing the sound seperately. And a lot better then crappy fraps-recordings.
