The idea is to give leagues and server owners a way to establish identity of players and thus enforce bans more permanently, rather than relying on IP and GUID. It's optional, most servers don't require it (you can see ones that do have a * next to them in the server listings here on the site). Its currently easy to bypass by creating another account (which just requires a new email), although this is against the Terms of Service: http://www.urbanterr...rms-of-service/

It has been effective in catching cheaters, in conjunction with the anticheat: http://www.urbanterr...-get-legit-bro/ Some of the people caught have skulked back with new accounts, but their reputation has been ruined. The current state of the anticheat is (as it ever was) a hot topic. HTH
