the texture you are seeing is the one displayed if a shader image (aka "texture") is missing. It can happen when some shaders "overload" others, or simply when files are corrupted and unreadable.
I suggest doing a full install of the game, also make sure you do NOT install it into the same directory as 4.2, otherwise this probably will happen again.
To do this, either delete all files and run the updater again, or, which is probably faster*/safer, just delete everything and download the full .zip.
*granted i dont know anything about the new updater's performance.

I tried doing the updater again, unlike the first time waiting for hours, it took a few minutes.
Most maps now look fine. But, last night tried a different server and one of the maps had some red-white-blue.
------------------
I am going to do a full download and do a fresh install.

Note: some custom maps got broken because original base game assets got removed from the packages. if it happens on base game maps, you have a "problem" though.

I downloaded the full game using the torrent download file, much faster like about 6 hours than using my browser to download.
Extracted the game into a new folder and ran it from there. Apparently all my settings I made to the original game in the other folder were carried over to the new folder game. Pretty neat. I am running Mint 17 Linux OS.
Playing the new folder game, not seeing any issues or any map problems. Looks like all is OK during game play.

Thats because your running linux. On linux, and with certain windows builts, all configs get saved to your home folder instead of the game directory, thus they carry over from version to version. sometimes this is nice, sometimes it bad. :)
