that will still show if a soundserver is running.

ps -e|grep artsd or something.

if it's kde, it should be in the control settings.

Ahh, no artsd running.

Kernel upgrade and ALSA recompile from nightly snapshot didn't help.

+set s_initsound 0 does make playability much better in firefights without the lack of input.  I still get the huge drop in fps (why oh why is muzzleflash locked on?), but I'm at least able to shoot back.

So going back to the earlier question, does anyone have any suggestions on USB sound cards for Linux since the built-in one has problems?
Unless there are tips to make the HDA-Intel cards perform better...

Thanks!

if it's only for gaming you can try a logitech headset. e.g. usb 350 works fine

TDK: I guess and hope you've already filed a bug against your salsa driver at https://bugtrack.als.../login_page.php

who knows, they might get back to you with a patch in some hours/days - with your support.

Well, after months of playability woes, I finally have this thing licked.  After reading about ALSA and threading issues that it sometimes has, I
messed around with taskset some.

Setting the processor affinity fixes the sound problem (and some fps issues).  I call ioUrbanTerror from taskset now, i.e.

  taskset -c 1 ioUrbanTerror.i386 +set fs_game q3ut4 +set com_hunkmegs 512

Without it, sound blocks mouse and keyboard input.

Thanks for all of the tips, guys!  It helped me track things down enough to figure this out.  Hopefully this will help someone else now too.

Well, nevermind, that didn't solve the problem.  :(  Things were awesome for two days after I set it, but suddenly it's all worse than ever before.  I tried a reboot and run nothing else on the system besides X, one xterm, and ioUrbanTerror.  No joy.  Things are blocking on sound once again.
