Playing Over LAN
Cannot create LAN server

Hi all,
I am trying to start a LAN game. On each machine I try, which all have the same 4.2 install, I get the following similar error:
broadcast: print "Server: auth_status changed to off (local)\n"
Unknown command "stopserverdemo"
-----------------------------------
Hitch warning: 1835 msec frame time
I don't know what this means. Quake 3 runs just fine, as does version three of UrT. Is LAN play supported for version 4.2?
Thanks in advance - Ulfr

make sure you have ui_dedicated set to 1 (==LAN) and then try starting a server. either via /map or via the menu. it SHOULD work...
if not you could try using the dedicated server app.
Anyway. that console output doesn't say anything about an error. The auth line just says that auth is disabled because of dedicated 1 (LAN), the next one is irrelevant and the hitch warning is more or less normal (i get those too for dedicated 1/2 servers i run from time to time)

Sorry for my bad spelling - I am still asleep. :)

OK, I tried that. The only way it starts up (I mean, goes to a map) is if I have "dedicated" set to "No".
I typed "/set ui_dedicated 1" into the console while on the server setup screen, it changed the item 'dedicated' to LAN. Goes out of the game to the console box still when I try to start it up. Does this on either computer I'm trying to start a game on.
I don't know how to start a server via /map.
It's werid that I can play Q3 or older versions of UrT but not this version, otherwise I would suspect something going on with my network. That should be fine- I'm not blocking any ports or UDP, & both computers are Win7.
Thanks for the help so far, any other suggestions?

Auth is available only on public servers (+set dedicated 2). You won't be able to connect to a server in localhost if the server has auth enabled (I do not remember exactly why) so the code automatically turn it off.

Nothing important really...the stopserverdemo command is available only when the server is dedicated (launched using the Quake3-UrT-Ded.i386/.x86_64/.exe engine). So if you start a server using the normal client engine, the code tries to execute the stopserverdemo everytime a map start, but this command is not available in the client engine so it report the warning. Can be fixed with a couple of lines of code but it's not important.

I can go into a map 'by myself' just fine. No one else on the network can see the server.
I'm going to reinstall the game on my second computer & see if that changes anything. It's suddenly decided it wants to play in just a corner of the screen, & it isn't even windowed, additionally it's not finding any internet servers either suddenly, so there might be something else wrong now.

Hi,
Mostly what Fenix said. But to add, the server may not show up in the local section of the in-game browser but still be available to play on. Find out your local IP address for whatever connection your PC is using (probably ethernet cable or wi-fi), and get other people on the LAN to connect using
You should also make sure that your firewall is allowing inbound connections on port 27960.
