It would also be nice if you announced a release date (after your sure everything is finished and tested) and stick to that date, that way everyone knows WHEN 4.3 will be released (perhaps even separate release date for server admins to have server ready to go on release date) that way people can just download/update and go!

It also adds excitement and anticipation. In that way it makes it more fun although it's harder to do. Even with a two week freeze where all you do is test and fix bugs you always end up bug fixing through the night before the release. You always find the worst bugs during the final 24 hours.

Hummm thinking about it some of the MAJOR mess was caused by members of the UN-comunity out to cause problems and screw people over.

Fake Torrents being released 2 hours before the official release containing a repacked 4.1
Fake screen names of the usual suspects saying in IRC or answering the question if it was OK to install over 4.1

Along with a few additional "out to cause problems" it took more than a few releases to correct the problems not of our making.

So some guidelines to make things go more smoothly.

1) "DO NOT" install 4.3 over top of 4.2
2) Any technical questions as to set up stick with individuals who you personally know, a blue shirt, or an OP on IRC. No disrespect but a lot of fake screen names floating around at the time of a major release.
3) Stick with the official release only. Getting a digital copy from your clan boss = OK but a lot of so called mirrors were faking for their own reasons.

(we use only official mirrors which will will post links and torrents to be suspect)

Assume any other form of mirror is a fake and download at your own risk.

you are aware that the release was not the issue but the game itself was/is.

it's what you did to the game and not how you released it, that caused the anger.

Aside from the animations (which frankie has explained why had to be changed many times), the game improved overall. Come on karl~

i feel that number says more than words .

i don't wanna start a discussion here, i wanted to point out that it's the developers' responsibilty what they did to the game over the past few years (both positive and negative),

blaming the way they released it for the "uprising" simply is a cheap move.. can't just let that happen without stating the obvious ..

i got nothing more to add.

after a freeze if a bug is found then the game is not ready. only after the game is ready should you announce a release date. not particularly fast way to release a game but at this stage a stable release is better than a fast release with auto updates.

Nitro, I was talking about how we did it for over a decade. We would do a freeze when we thought the code was clean and then announce a release date for 2 weeks later. During that 2 weeks we then continued testing in case we missed something. It always turned out that things are missed and usually not found until the night before the release. This is just the way it is no matter how hard you test and no matter how many people are on QA testing. You will always find bugs so you have to decide whether the bug is a show stopper and whether it can be fixed before the release. I was QA manager for a major telco and worked on many world wide projects including Y2K and Local Number Portability so I know how these things go.
