Even the addition of the auth system did not change that much, hardly comparable to steam anyway...
I wish you'd stick to a more obstacle free approach
To be fair, for most people, Steam is the most obstacle free approach. It's very easy to press install, wait for the DL to finish, then press play.

We plan to use the Valve AntiCheat (VAC) in Urban Terror HD for clients that have Steam activated. It means that if you are caught cheating by VAC, your Steam and UrT accounts will be permanently banned.
The UrTHD game updates will be handled automatically by Steam but we will continue distributing .zip files of the game on our website as well.
I like the integration with Steam, but if someone want to cheat on a public server, he only needs play without Steam? It's unfair, if Steam have a anti cheat, why not make mandatory play with Steam account?

That way everyone will be happy (I guess?). Non-authenticated people will be able to play on servers that do not enforce authentication and authenticated people will be able to play everywhere.

Will you make community maps, i.e making an official map with the communities ideas, like Dice is doing with Battlefield 4?
Will you make player skins special, i.e having logos, emblems etc. on your chest or other places. Some you can achieve via Steam, and making you looking unique?
How will the custom hair thing work?

lol .. for me urt hd is clearly headed into the wrong direction .. imo you are aiming for stuff the game does not need: useless make-up content, awards and achievments .. if i was mean, i'd claim you guys are blinded by ue4's light .. urt should be as pure as, i don't know, tetris or hotline miami (gameplay-wise)
from here it seems like you do what is offered instead of sticking to your own vision .. or at worst the average, mediocre, off the rack fps-game actually is something you'd call your vision for urt..
i guess i am more looking forward to 4.3 than to urt hd now..

Well, right now (4.2) is like you say, but the problem (I think) it's about servers allowing people play with and without account at the same time.
Almost all servers use mixed mode, maybe that's why so many people playing without account.

Perhaps this helps that people want to get an account to play. I hope so and that majority of the servers run with anticheat, but seeing the current situation where only people with account is under the gaze of anticheats , I foresee servers full of cheaters (more players, more cheaters, many) if the ways to enter a server, are like now.
set auth_enable "1" // Set this to 0 to disable the authentication system (more informations on www urbanterror info)
set auth_notoriety "0" // Minimum notoriety level to be able to connect to your server. 0 allows everyone to join
It's only my opinion, I don't know if someone more think like me on this thing

Quoted for truth.
Dam rights we as a team are 100% in love with Unreal 4 as 90% of the issues facing Urban Terror falls on the other side of obsolesces by design. Nothing is working the way it should as far as the ideas of adding in new features that directly support the ideals and suggestions made by the “community†as a whole.
Epic is the first company in a long time that is even interested in our ideas as to what we want to achieve for the next 15 years as compared to the relationship that once was id/FS that full filled the need to have the engine designer available but it should be clear to most that even id has become yet another victim of OBD.
And
As always we as a team are interested in the ideas presented by the community and more than willing to implement them if they fit with in the fabric of design over personal preferences, look how well that concept works for Linux, yet where we are we can't get to where we all hope this great game will be one day with out change that some may feel does not fit with in the ideals of doing it the right way.
Yes
I agree there are time that we don't know what the hell we are doing as getting it done the right way takes a lot of failures figuring out how to do it through discovery that makes all of the individual parts fit as the sum total of all it's parts.
What is clear.
Top of the list is the “community†wants to see more players yet the ideals are “fix it but don't change anything†seems to be the stronger argument that adding fluff to a 15 year old game will introduce our efforts to a fresh community with 21st century expectations as to what makes for a good game beyond the first impression.
So
To give you the opportunity to state you mind and intentions as to the “right†direction by all means feel free to tell us your views as to what you expect that direction should be as to getting to a year from now,ten years from now, or even another fifteen?
On the other hand.
If all you want is what will get us to tomorrow then you’re out of luck and as I already said we can't get there from here.
Of interest.
Since we made the engine switch not one person has asked us why we switch engine in the first place as it seems that “some†are more interested in telling us that it was a bad idea.
