hey there. i have never had anything to do with mapping and i don't really understand how anything works, but if anybody is working on converting the ut_austria map to ue4 i could help out with some pictures of houses and stuff since i live in vienna.
but i don't know how "real" you want the map to be and if this sounds totally ridiculous.

Good reference pictures are always welcome. I use Google street view as well as just searching for images when researching a location for a map. A map of Vienna would be nice but it might not be the same as ut_austria. This map was made by Tub and he hasn't been around for many years.

a ut_vienna map with austria similar layout would be a nice change and freshing things up :D
tbh I would rather see NEW HD maps that old maps converted.. new engine. new physics. new game. new maps. nice boost of freshness to revive the community...

New maps would be super cool but who is going to make them?
Any map we own or have stewardship over takes a few days, even less depending, and the ideal would be to have at least a half dozen maps ready to go on release day.
The flip side is Barbie can use a converted map to dial in the game physics.

Hi all,
Frankie I understand your concern, at the moment i am getting used to the new engine you have a big head start on all of us I think.
I am working to realize a level in the new engine i figured if i start now i might be able to have something ready on release date I don't know if the map will be good in public opinion.
Perhaps there will be a few dozen maps by FS members and the community that everybody agrees on.
I'm being optimistic that more mappers will go from q3 and radiant to u4 engine its kinda big learning curve if you can get over that the challenge should keep anyone interested.

sory, i forgot that i actually posted this
as far as i know they don't have google street fiew for vienna yet.
i'll try not to forget about this again.
we could try to implement a placa or a park or something and then work around that. or make a map where red dragon has to plant a bomb at the parliament xD

Yuper it's a bit of a learning curve but Unreal 4 does comes with ready made content, assets, and modular units that one can make the transition by learning while they do.
Good example
Made using the assets available in the Matinee sample.
The big thing I'm waiting for is for the other shoe to drop and someone begins the Big Project of making a living breathing environment of not just a map to shoot guns in but as a project that continues to grow with each new release.
You can make a map based on the time of day from dawn to dusk and have things like street lights turn on and off.
You can make a map based on the seasons from summer to fall to winter to spring so if someone plays the map in winter it could be snowing. You can even tie into weather systems that if your map is based on Paris, and it's snowing, then its snowing in your project.
Christmas put up Christmas decorations and Christmas trees and if Halloween activate a different set of decorations.
You can break the map down into block so if someone living in Paris they could make their own home, that’s part of a given block, and it can or could be added to the next update.
A small idea turning big someone could build up a project that an entire community can be built around who would be bugging you every ten minuets as to when to expect the next update. ;)

I love the concept and the possibility of creating various seasons and the weather system.
But will we have to make players download the new updated version of the entire map every time such an update is made or will the game prompt the player that a smaller in size patch of the map is available and ready for download.
Where will the repository be, can we use our own dropbox and add info into the map as to where to connect for download when a new update is made?
And i think years ago some of us suggested a built in map browser in the game itself so players can browse through new maps, see screenshots, player reviews, and maybe even a number of servers that actually contain the map in rotation.
A feature like that would be very useful for players to help them decide which map they want to download, especially cause i doubt maps for UrT HD will be 5-15 MB's in size like maps for UrT 4.xx are.
And not many players want to spend time and bandwidth on a 200+ MB map that sucks or can't be found on any servers.

well the big map project is for someone else to do. ;) Wish I had the time but a living map project can become just as big to manage as the game it's self, even more so in some cases, so it's not something that one will see as part of the main project that's Urban Terror but a project that would revolve around a sub-community...say like Jumpers or Icy maps.
How big it can become is well subjective. The real world sample from 2015 GDC is 100 square miles and as a full download would be rather massive but as the example if the project was to do Paris in detail once again it can be broken down into blocks and progressive loading used to update the map (in UE4 I think they call it streaming) so one could always be in the persistent level and other areas added as they are made available.
So
This would mean someone into downloading the map from the start would have a smaller download as say compared to someone jumping in for the first time.
Is it worth it? Maybe if there is a couple of hundred players playing on the map at any given time.
