im using ubuntu 6.06 dapper
im at work so i cant really give to much system specs, like kernal and cool stuff like that, but ask and ill try to remember.
my problem is that when i load vanilla quake i have sound fine, but when i load mod urbanterror the game locks up with the sound repeating the same tone over and over.
i tried with fs_game q3ut3 and also as root.
if i have teamspeak running (with oss) i have no sound in urbanterror but it doesnt lock up.
i know im using onboard sound ich6 intel something or other if i recall correctly.
if i went and bought a cheap sb16 would this fix my issue?
i also have the most current alsa drivers, and all the updates for ubuntu.

im not sure if that would work for me.
seems there is something screwy with my /dev/dsp
when i have teamspeak running i get an error "can not load /dev/dsp" in the sound initialization part of the load up in the console.
if i have xmms up i get the same thing when trying to load teamspeak or any other sound app.
just curious if a sound card rather then onboard sound would fix this issue.

for the record, single channel cards aren't the problem, alsa provides excellent very low latency mixing. the problem here is q3 (retail, not the gpl tree of icculus) and teamspeak still using /dev/dsp, making user space mixing necessary. most sites suggest artsd, while it may be easier and more likely to 'work', oss2jack will usually provide lower latency if you manage to make it run.

will i have to get other files to get it to work?
im still pretty new to linux so any help would be appreciated.
