Well i've found that there is a much higher skill level in 4.2 servers than 4.1 servers. Not to say that 4.1ers are noobs. I still play 4.1 a lot too but the few servers that I can play have much more challenging players.

Yeah the animations sucks and there is not much that can be done about that.

It's just the nature of morph based animations that the moment you change one thing something else in the chain behaves in an unpredictable manner and in some cases can present bugs that includes server crashing.

In my opinion the MD3 based animations have far exceed the limitations of the original Quake 3 design long ago, which even then players complained about, and looking through the archives this is historical that once was was always the best.

Just my opinion but 4.1 animations are not better but just different and players just got use to them from previous versions and I agree there was no point in changing them for 4.2 except for one reason and one reason alone.

There was a flaw in design of having two separate animation channels, one for MD3 visible and one for the trimesh hit mesh, where you “could” empty a mag into a player and collision did not occur.

Changes to the animations was not done to make the animations < cough cough > better but to correct problems with collision detection by putting all of the animations onto the same animation channel.

This was also done to prevent players from glitching the animations once a player “learned” under what conditions hits would not occur and use the effect as an unfair advantage.

As for fixing things I can't fix complaints like “strange”, “weird”, “different” as that is just the way it is and always will be and although I can change something once again it does not mean it makes things better. With MD3 you will always be trading one problem for another period.

We fired up a 2.6a server one time, just to enjoy some nostalgia and reflect back on where we've come. The animations were ... awkward. Circle jumping? Wall jumps? Talk about not feeling the same.

You've come a long way baby. 4.2 is improving, but I think some ppl are still pissed about 1) change, 2) 4.2.001 was a bit broken, 3) diapers are full.

Considering I haven't been around that long, I never saw those arguments; however, I did specifically ask about them and no one recalls anything that hit a wall like this. Maybe they weren't paying attention, who knows?


And @Frankie, I get what you're saying and I understand certain things had to be sacrificed but it just seems that the animations are awkward and visually lost fluidity. When I say they're distracting, I mean that in a literal sense. I get so caught up in trying to decipher the odd movement and jumping, it just throws me off. They're still nowhere near as crack monkeyd out as they were with the .001 release though.

Also, I guess i should probably change my main qualm. If I want to find a CTF server that doesn't have a shitty bot with artificial ping blocking you in garage on turnpike, I have to go to 4.1. I assume prediction of the animations will come with time played in 4.2 but the player base is still lacking. I like to waste time on pubs but I like to waste it with people.
